Abstract:
Abstinence is a structured recovery safeguard that helps scam victims stabilize after the psychological shock of betrayal. Relationship scams disrupt attachment, reward processing, and threat perception, often leaving survivors emotionally dysregulated and decision-impaired well beyond the point of discovery. Returning to dating too soon can serve as emotional avoidance, prolong trauma bonds, and increase exposure to manipulation by criminals or unhealthy partners. A period of abstinence creates the conditions needed for nervous system regulation, grief integration, and rebuilding a coherent sense of self. It allows judgment and boundaries to recover without the pressure of romantic urgency. Abstinence is not withdrawal from life, and it is not a moral restriction. It is a deliberate, time-limited form of self-protection that favors long-term safety and resilience over immediate emotional comfort. When supported by education, routine, and trusted connections, abstinence lowers the risk of repeat harm and supports the development of healthier future relationships.
