Abstract:
Scam survivors often endure a secondary injury after the crime ends, one shaped by judgment, misinterpretation, and loss of voice rather than direct financial harm. Once the scam is exposed, others may begin to define the survivor by the victimization itself, filtering their identity through assumptions about weakness, poor judgment, or personal failure. These reactions can come from family, institutions, or even support spaces that intend to help but inadvertently reinforce shame. Over time, repeated exposure to external judgment can be absorbed internally, narrowing self-identity and undermining confidence and agency. Recovery depends on recognizing this process and interrupting it. When survivors reclaim authorship of their own story and engage with environments that prioritize understanding, dignity, and context, self-blame begins to loosen. Rebuilding agency and self-compassion allows the person to re-establish a stable sense of self that is larger than the crime.
