On the Square — On the square describes honest conduct or legitimate work in contrast with swindling. Historical criminal slang uses the expression to distinguish lawful dealings from deceptive operations. The term does not name a scam and does not prove that someone claiming it behaves honestly. – Legitimacy-Related Slang
