Abstract:
After a relationship scam, many survivors develop betrayal traumaBetrayal Trauma — Betrayal trauma is the psychological injury that follows deception, manipulation, and violation of trust by someone believed to be safe or meaningful. In scams, this injury may involve emotional, financial, relational, and identity-based harm. Recovery requires recognizing that the wound is real and cannot be reduced to poor judgment or ordinary disappointment. More that constricts attention around threat detection, repetitive rumination, and intense self-criticism, often described as scam fog or psychological narrowing. This state keeps the nervous system focused on danger and error correction, limiting perspective and emotional flexibility. Awe represents a distinct emotional experience characterized by perceived vastness and the need to mentally adjust to something larger than the self. Unlike wonder, which stimulates curiosity and exploration, awe tends to quiet self-focus and soften rigid internal narratives. In this way, awe can counter trauma-driven tunnel vision by interrupting repetitive thought loops, supporting parasympathetic calming, and reducing corrosive cynicism. It gently reintroduces survivors to experiences of beauty, moral goodness, and meaning that trauma often obscures. Accessible practices include brief awe moments in nature, intentional awe walks, and exposure to inspiring human stories or acts of courage. Early in recovery, emotional numbness is common, and awe may feel distant. With patience and repetition, these experiences can gradually reopen psychological space without forcing emotional intensity.
