LYRICS
We told you where the road goes.
We showed you what it costs.
If you still choose the wrong turn,
that choice is yours, not ours.
We are not here to drag you.
We are not here to fight.
You want to walk into the dark,
we will not block your right.
You got a choice, so make it,
we ain’t taking that away.
You can listen to the warning
or ignore what people say.
You can turn back toward the fire
just because you miss the heat.
You can swear you want a future
while you’re walking in retreat.
But don’t confuse our silence
with us saying that it’s right.
We can see exactly where you’re headed.
We just won’t join that fight.
We gave the map.
We marked the danger.
We told you where it bends.
But we don’t chase somebody
who keeps running from their friends.
You want the road that hurts you?
You are free to make that call.
But freedom doesn’t mean
we have to follow when you fall.
We won’t stop you.
That’s your path.
We won’t chase you.
That’s your past.
We won’t fight you
for the life you say you want.
But walk with us,
and we walk with you.
Take one step,
we’ll take one too.
You choose the road.
You choose the pace.
But we only help
the ones who walk this way.
Help ain’t carrying your body
while you fight to stay behind.
Help ain’t arguing forever
with a closed and settled mind.
Help is meeting you halfway
when you finally start to move.
Help is standing there beside you
while your actions match the truth.
You don’t have to be fearless.
You don’t have to know it all.
You can shake with every footstep.
You can stumble. You can crawl.
But there has to be a movement.
There has to be a choice.
There has to come a moment
when your actions match your voice.
Say you’re ready, then get ready.
Say you’re walking, take the stride.
We got room for everybody
who is willing to decide.
But we’re done pulling people
toward a life they will not choose.
You are free to walk away.
And we are free
to let you.
We won’t stop you.
That’s your path.
We won’t chase you.
That’s your past.
We won’t fight you
for the life you say you want.
But walk with us,
and we walk with you.
Take one step,
we’ll take one too.
You choose the road.
You choose the pace.
But we only help
the ones who walk this way.
No chains.
No force.
No guilt.
No control.
Your feet.
Your road.
Your life.
Your soul.
You want another direction?
Go.
But understand something before you go:
We won’t abandon our direction
just to keep you at our side.
You don’t get to choose our road
while refusing yours to guide.
Respect runs both directions.
Choice belongs to everyone.
You choose where your feet are going.
We choose
where our help belongs.
See, compassion has a boundary.
Support has one as well.
We can point toward solid ground,
but we can’t follow you through hell.
We can give you what we’ve learned.
We can tell you what we know.
We can stand beside the doorway.
But you’re the one
who has to go.
And if you choose to turn around,
that’s not betrayal on our part.
We aren’t punishing your choices.
We’re protecting what we are.
Because helping without movement
turns support into a chain.
And trying harder than you do
doesn’t heal anybody’s pain.
So choose.
Not because we told you.
Not because you’re scared we’ll leave.
Choose because the road ahead
is finally something you believe.
Then put your foot down on it.
That’s when we arrive.
You don’t need us to choose your life.
You need us
when you choose to live it.
We won’t stop you.
That’s your path.
We won’t chase you.
That’s your past.
We won’t beg you
to become what you reject.
But walk with us,
and we walk with you.
Bring your effort.
We’ll bring ours too.
Your road.
Your choice.
Your consequence.
Our hand
is here for those
who take the steps.
Your choice is yours.
So is ours.
You choose your road.
We choose who we walk beside.
Walk with us,
and we walk with you.
This is the way!
Why the SCARS Institute Provides Songs for Scam Survivors
Traumatic scam victimization affects far more than a person’s finances. It disrupts attention, memory, emotional regulation, trust, identity, and the ability to absorb new information.
For many scam survivors, especially during periods of intense emotional activation, ordinary educational material can be difficult to process. The mind can remain focused on threat, loss, betrayal, shame, and unanswered questions. When the amygdala and related threat systems are highly activated, concentration and deliberate reasoning can become more difficult. A message that is intellectually understood can still struggle to reach the emotional places where it is most needed.
Music provides another pathway!
Rhythm, melody, repetition, imagery, and emotion can carry meaning differently from ordinary instruction. A survivor who struggles to concentrate on several pages of educational material can sometimes hear a song and retain a phrase, an image, or a central truth. Messages such as “you were deceived,” “you are not alone,” “this was not your fault,” “others have survived this,” and “healing requires continued participation” can be encountered without demanding the same sustained cognitive effort required by formal learning.
There is another important reason.
Scammers frequently weaponize music. Scammers choose a victim’s favorite songs, and then they often become associated with grooming, romantic attachment, imagined futures, declarations of love, anniversaries, private rituals, and emotionally intense conversations. After the crime is revealed, music that once brought comfort can suddenly become painful. A favorite song can become a trauma cue and a trigger because it is connected to the criminal and the false relationship.
New music offers survivors an opportunity to reclaim that territory!
A song created around survival, understanding, grief, learning, courage, or rebuilding can become something new to enjoy without belonging to the scam. Music no longer has to remain the property of the criminal memory. New emotional associations can gradually be created around different experiences and meanings.
Songs also communicate something every survivor needs to hear repeatedly: other people understand.
Hearing fear, confusion, betrayal, shame, grief, and recovery expressed through another human voice can reduce the sense of isolation that frequently follows scam victimization. The survivor hears that these experiences are recognizable, shared, and survivable.
SCARS provides songs because education does not have to exist only in books, articles, lectures, or support discussions. Sometimes knowledge needs melody. Sometimes reassurance needs rhythm. Sometimes an important truth needs to be heard many times before it can finally be felt:
You are not alone. You were deceived. It was not your fault. And there is still life ahead.
