LYRICS

You heard a whisper through the night,
A borrowed voice, a stolen light.
Your name arrived with every dawn,
You built a world to lean upon.
You heard the future, bright and clear,
You felt a distant stranger near.
Each promise found your waiting heart,
While hidden hands pulled truth apart.

You felt the love; the lie was planned.
You reached for an invented hand.
Your hope was real, your heart was true;
The crime belongs to those who fooled you.

You hear the signals through the static,
Your heartbeat racing, automatic.
You turn the dial, you face the sound,
You plant your feet on solid ground.
You hear the echo, face the fear,
You choose which signals you hold near.
You find the truth beneath the noise,
You tune your life to your own voice.

You wake to silence, check the screen,
You mourn the life that should have been.
Your fingers seek the old hello,
Your heart still hums and won’t let go.
You miss the plans, the daily call,
The home you pictured through it all.
You grieve the years, the money gone,
The trust you used to lean upon.

You feel the wave without the song,
You miss a place you don’t belong.
Your grief is real, though love was staged;
You need no shame to turn the page.

You hear the signals through the static,
Your heartbeat racing, automatic.
You turn the dial, you face the sound,
You plant your feet on solid ground.
You hear the echo, face the fear,
You choose which signals you hold near.
You find the truth beneath the noise,
You tune your life to your own voice.

You scan a smile, you doubt a friend,
You read each pause as one more end.
You turn the volume up too high,
You hear a threat in each reply.
Your chest remembers what went wrong,
Your watchful nights stretch out too long.
You name the fear, you check what’s true,
You let the present speak to you.

You owe no answer to that call,
You build a gate instead of walls.
You keep the liars from your door,
You leave their channel evermore.
You take your time, you test the ground,
You learn where honest hearts are found.
You hear a friend who lets you cry,
You need no perfect alibi.
You share your grief, you speak your name,
You find a room that holds no blame.
You feel the hiss, but choose your way,
You give your life another day.

You hear new signals through the static,
Your heartbeat steadier, less frantic.
You turn the dial, you face the sound,
You plant your feet on solid ground.
You hear the echo, let it fade,
You trust the choices you have made.
You find the truth beneath the noise,
You tune your life to your own voice.

You carry scars, you carry light,
You hear the morning through the night.
You let the truth come shining through;
Your strongest signal comes from you.

You are the frequency.

This is the way

Why?

“Signals” follows a scam victim’s journey from counterfeit affection to the gradual return of personal trust and judgment. Radio signals represent the messages and promises criminals use to manufacture a relationship, while static represents the fear, confusion, and lingering attachment left behind. The silence after contact ends brings grief for the imagined companion, the promised future, financial losses, and the earlier sense of security. The victim’s feelings were genuine, and responsibility for the deception belongs to the criminals.

Recovery unfolds through learning to distinguish the echoes of betrayal from what is happening in the present. Boundaries, careful decisions, dependable friendships, and a community free from blame help the survivor recognize honest signals again. The closing message centers on reclaiming authority over personal meaning and direction. Pain no longer determines every choice, and the survivor’s own voice becomes the strongest signal.

Why the SCARS Institute Provides Songs for Scam Survivors

Traumatic scam victimization affects far more than a person’s finances. It disrupts attention, memory, emotional regulation, trust, identity, and the ability to absorb new information.

For many scam survivors, especially during periods of intense emotional activation, ordinary educational material can be difficult to process. The mind can remain focused on threat, loss, betrayal, shame, and unanswered questions. When the amygdala and related threat systems are highly activated, concentration and deliberate reasoning can become more difficult. A message that is intellectually understood can still struggle to reach the emotional places where it is most needed.

Music provides another pathway!

Rhythm, melody, repetition, imagery, and emotion can carry meaning differently from ordinary instruction. A survivor who struggles to concentrate on several pages of educational material can sometimes hear a song and retain a phrase, an image, or a central truth. Messages such as “you were deceived,” “you are not alone,” “this was not your fault,” “others have survived this,” and “healing requires continued participation” can be encountered without demanding the same sustained cognitive effort required by formal learning.

There is another important reason.

Scammers frequently weaponize music. Scammers choose a victim’s favorite songs, and then they often become associated with grooming, romantic attachment, imagined futures, declarations of love, anniversaries, private rituals, and emotionally intense conversations. After the crime is revealed, music that once brought comfort can suddenly become painful. A favorite song can become a trauma cue and a trigger because it is connected to the criminal and the false relationship.

New music offers survivors an opportunity to reclaim that territory!

A song created around survival, understanding, grief, learning, courage, or rebuilding can become something new to enjoy without belonging to the scam. Music no longer has to remain the property of the criminal memory. New emotional associations can gradually be created around different experiences and meanings.

Songs also communicate something every survivor needs to hear repeatedly: other people understand.

Hearing fear, confusion, betrayal, shame, grief, and recovery expressed through another human voice can reduce the sense of isolation that frequently follows scam victimization. The survivor hears that these experiences are recognizable, shared, and survivable.

SCARS provides songs because education does not have to exist only in books, articles, lectures, or support discussions. Sometimes knowledge needs melody. Sometimes reassurance needs rhythm. Sometimes an important truth needs to be heard many times before it can finally be felt:

You are not alone. You were deceived. It was not your fault. And there is still life ahead.
